The Nathan and Kiyoko Lerner Foundation, an art program that is part of the Thresholds agency for disabled adults on Chicago’s south side, sponsor artist Winnifred Birts. She mostly uses Markers and paint pens on a variety of surfaces such as paper, vinyl, and canvas board. Her subject matter is generally people and scenes that express her visions of the contemporary African-American urban experience. She often portrays women in beautiful dresses or interesting social settings. Birts’ drawings capture the essence of Chicago neighborhood life.
